This innovation represents a “generational leap” over traditional White OLED on Silicon by eliminating color filters and depositing red, green, and blue organic materials directly onto a silicon wafer.
Key Innovations in AR/VR Displays
- RGB on Silicon (OLEDoS): By moving from white OLED plus a color filter to a direct RGB structure, Samsung achieved significantly higher brightness and a wider field of view due to improved chief ray angles.
- Extreme Specifications: The showcase included a 1.4-inch panel with an industry-leading 5,000 PPI (Pixels Per Inch) and peak brightness levels exceeding 15,000 nits.
- Tandem OLED Technology: Samsung demonstrated a tandem direct-patterning version capable of reaching 20,000 to 30,000 nits, doubling the brightness of previous iterations.
- Color Accuracy: These displays offer exceptional color fidelity, covering 99% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.
Integration and Production
- eMagin Integration: Following its acquisition, eMagin is now a fully integrated division within Samsung Display. Research and development are currently split between New York and Korea, with large-scale mass production optimized for Korean facilities.
