Samsung Display Explains QD OLED Display Upgrades at CES 2025

I’m Chris Chinnock here for Insight Media in the Samsung Display booth at CES 2025, looking at their latest TV display technology.

QD-OLED with New EL Stack

The big news this year is the introduction of a new EL stack in Samsung’s QD-OLED TVs, resulting in a significant increase in luminance:

  • 2023: 2,000 nits peak brightness (3% window)
  • 2024: 3,000 nits
  • 2025: 4,000 nits

That’s a major improvement over the last few years. The demo highlights lifelike colors enabled by this higher luminance. These displays look stunning, and the extra brightness really makes a difference—even at off angles.

Three Key Applications

Samsung is applying this technology in three ways:

  1. TVs: Highest luminance for premium viewing.
  2. Inkjet Printing Process: Boosts PPI (pixels per inch) for sharper displays.
  3. High-Speed Optimization: Demonstrated with a monitor running at 240 Hz vs. 500 Hz.
    • At 240 Hz, motion looks smooth.
    • Beyond that, improvements seem like diminishing returns—at least to my eye (I’m not an avid gamer, so hardcore gamers may feel differently).

Future Tech

Samsung also showcased future display concepts with increased PPI for ultra-crisp visuals. These panels look exceptionally sharp and refined.

Summary: Samsung Display continues to push QD-OLED performance with higher brightness, improved pixel density, and speed optimizations—setting a new benchmark for premium TVs and monitors.
