In his report from SID Display Week, Chris Chinnock of Insight Media detailed the latest advancements in stretchable display technology, specifically focusing on prototypes from two major manufacturers. Both companies utilized microLEDs on flexible substrates to achieve their results.
LG Display: Automotive Integration
- Specs: A 12-inch display with 100 PPI resolution and 1,000 nits of brightness.
- Flexibility: It boasts 50% stretchability and 39% transparency.
- Application: LG demonstrated this technology in an automotive center console concept, showing how the display could contour to functional areas like cup holders.
Samsung Display: High-Resolution Prototype
- Specs: An 11-inch device with a higher pixel density of 120 PPI.
- Flexibility: This model offers 25% stretchability.
- Technology: It uses tiny RGB microLEDs (15 x 25 microns) to create a seamless image even when the surface is manipulated into various contours.
Key Industry Observations
- MicroLED Dominance: Most stretchable applications are currently gravitating toward microLEDs in the 15–30 micron size range.
- Market Presence: While AUO has shown similar automotive tech previously (at CES), only LG and Samsung had major stretchable showcases at this specific event. Other major players like BOE or Tianma did not have visible stretchable prototypes on the floor.
