In this transcript from Display Week 2025, Jeff Yurek, Head of Marketing at Nanosys, demonstrates how Quantum Dot (QD) technology is specifically engineered to meet the extreme demands of the automotive industry.
1. Visibility in Extreme Lighting
- The Demo: Nanosys compared a QD display to a conventional LCD under 10,000 lux of ambient light (mimicking a bright, midday sun).
- Color Saturation: The QD display achieved 114% NTSC color gamut coverage, significantly outperforming the conventional display’s 97% NTSC.
- Customer Language: Yurek noted that while the NTSC standard is considered antiquated in other sectors, it remains the primary specification used by automotive brands.
2. Rigorous Automotive Reliability
- Thermal Stability: To survive a vehicle’s interior, cadmium-free QD films must pass accelerated lifetime tests, such as surviving 105°C (221°F) for 1,000 hours.
- System Engineering: Meeting these specs required Nanosys and its partners to reinforce the entire display system, including the resins and plastic substrates (PMMA/PET) that hold the dots.
3. Commercial Milestone
- Design Win: Yurek officially announced that Nanosys has secured its first design win with a major automotive brand, marking the transition of this technology from lab prototypes to production vehicles.
