LG Display showed their 4Kx4K microOLEDs for VR and watch applications, a transparent OLED for automotive or signage and a stereoscopic LCD panel for automotive.
I’m at the LG Display booth at DisplayWeek 2024, exploring some exciting developments in microOLED, transparent OLED, and 3D display technology.
MicroOLED for Smartwatches
LG showcased a microOLED display with impressive specs:
- Brightness: 9,000 nits
- Application: Smartwatch with 2D/3D switchable display
- Technology:
- Integrated sensor detects face and eye position
- Calculates distance and possibly interpupillary distance
- Creates a stereoscopic effect with strong negative parallax, making images appear in front of the watch and “pop out”
- Performance:
- Smooth adjustment as the viewer moves
- Likely uses a light field design rather than a lenticular layer
- Supports 30–100 views, making it a super-multi-view display
The result? A surprisingly good 3D effect with excellent depth and clarity.
Triple-Stack MicroOLED
Another demo featured:
- Triple-stack architecture
- Brightness: 10,000 nits
- Same core display technology, optimized for higher luminance.
Transparent OLED
LG also showed a 13.7-inch transparent OLED:
- Transparency: Increased to 60%
- Purity: ~80% (definition unclear)
- Resolution: Low at 40 PPI
- Targeted for specialty applications where transparency matters more than pixel density.
Automotive 3D Display
Finally, LG demonstrated a 12.3-inch LTPS LCD cluster:
- Eye-tracked stereoscopic display
- Parallax pushed into the screen for a more natural look (images don’t pop out aggressively)
- Designed for automotive applications, delivering a comfortable and appealing 3D experience.
Key Takeaways
LG Display is pushing boundaries with:
- Ultra-bright microOLEDs for wearables
- Transparent OLEDs for futuristic designs
- Eye-tracked 3D displays for automotive use
These innovations highlight LG’s commitment to next-generation display technology across multiple markets.
