“Deep Image” Optical Concept

Kyocera is developing a display system that mimics the realism of high-end simulators.

  • Collimated Inspiration: The technology is similar to collimated displays used in flight simulators.
  • Realistic Perception: The goal is to make images appear distant and three-dimensional rather than flat.
  • Optical Depth: By using specialized optics, the display creates a sense of physical space behind the screen.

Digital Mirror Applications

The demonstration focuses on replacing traditional glass mirrors with electronic versions that feel more natural.

  • Side & Rear View Mirrors: Kyocera showcased electronic mirrors that provide a more realistic perspective than standard flat panels.
  • Overcoming “Flatness”: Typical electronic mirrors can be disconcerting; this system aims to restore the depth drivers expect from glass.
  • Noticeable Curvature: The prototype side-view mirror features a distinct curve to enhance the field of view and depth.

Current Prototypes & Challenges

While the concept is promising, the hardware is still in the early stages of development.

  • Cockpit Integration: An instrument cluster demo showed an image appearing roughly one foot “inside” the dashboard.
  • Visual Artifacts: The current rearview mirror prototype suffers from distortions, aberrations, and reflections.
  • Narrow Form Factor: Despite the internal optics required for the depth effect, the physical units remain relatively slim.
