Hongshi Intelligent Tech used Display Week 2026 to launch their new full-color microLED panel called Silk-Light. They use an 8-inch mass production line located in Suzhou. Ten AR brands already use their microLED display with ten more expected this year.
The company is now moving beyond being a simple microLED supplier to a system level provider focused on integrating displays, optics and algorithms. This includes adding hybrid bonding and metasurface capabilities.
Already launched is the Aurora A6 microLED which is a 0.12-inch VGA resolution device offered in native GaN blue and green with red offered via QD conversion. The company said lifetime on the red is 1000 hours to T90, but they did not know the starting luminance or current density. Color was available via a cube combiner that offers a 25-degree FOV in a 0.34 cc volume.
The new Silk Light panel reduces the pixel pitch from 3.7 to 2.4 microns with the same VGA resolution but in a diagonal of 0.08 inches. The full color engine is still composed of three panels and has the same 25-degree FOV, but the engine shrinks to 0.16 cc. This equates to a PPD of 32 (PPI=10,583).
To achieve this result, they needed to optimize their hybrid bonding by moving to copper-to-copper bonding. This technology is already used in CMOS image sensors and high bandwidth memory. The advantages of this approach include atomic level bonding, elimination of the micro-pad, extremely low parasitic capacitance, and support for ultra-high signal bandwidth.
Importantly, the company is implementing a metasurface lens to save space over conventional refractive optical elements. Additional benefits include digital programming of the light field and enhanced EQE. Their algorithms perform pixel-level optimization including removal of crosstalk and chromatic aberrations, a characteristic of metalenses.
