At CES 2026, Himax highlighted its leadership in microdisplays and AI sensing, particularly through its breakthrough Front-lit LCoS technology and WiseEye AI integrations.
Front-lit LCoS Breakthrough
Traditionally, LCoS displays require a bulky polarizing beam splitter (PBS) at a 45-degree angle, making them too large for slim AR eyewear. Himax’s new architecture uses an edge-lit backlight style with a waveguide on top of the LCoS panel, drastically reducing its size.
- Ultra-Compact Form Factor: The display module volume is merely 0.09 c.c. and weighs only 0.21 grams without a collimator lens. Even with a collimator, it remains just 0.34 c.c..
- High Performance: It features a 720 x 720 resolution with approximately 2.5-micron pixels. It delivers up to 350,000 nits of brightness at the microdisplay level and over 1,000 nits to the eye.
- Power Efficiency: The system operates at an ultralow power consumption of approximately 200 mW to 300 mW.
- Market Adoption: This technology is currently used in the Meta Ray-Ban glasses.
Advanced AR and AI Sensing
Himax showcased how its optics and sensing technologies combine to create all-day wearable AR devices.
- Optical Partnerships: Himax collaborated with AUO to integrate its LCoS with AUO’s high-efficiency waveguides. It also introduced a prescription-ready reference design with Vuzix.
- WiseEye AI: The WiseEye AI processor enables contextual awareness by simultaneously supporting outward-facing object recognition and inward-facing eye tracking at negligible power levels.
- Aurora IIS/IIE Eye-Tracking: Developed with Ganzin, this solution features miniature eye sensors and IR LEDs to allow for always-on gaze interaction.
- Segmented LCD Dimming: A specialized 100×100 segmented LCD module acts as an electronic shutter, providing zoned dimming to increase contrast for virtual objects in AR glasses.
