At the recent “Seeing is Believing” seminar, BOE’s Hao Zhang talked about their development activities around AR and VR devices. They are focused on developing fast LCD devices for VR, microOLED for birdbath-type AR, and microLED for waveguide-type AR.
In the fast LCD category, they are redesigning the stripe pixel to offer a triad arrangement with very tight packing. This will increase the PPI from 2117 to 2500, which they plan to show at DisplayWeek 2026. It is LTPO based with a new high transmittance color filter array, miniLED backlight and low reflectance surface treatment.
In microOLED, BOE has a range of devices they can offer (0.39, 0.49, 0.5, 0.9, 1.3, 1.35-inch) with resolutions from FHD to 3552 x 3840. BOE is also working on an RGB stacked microLED solution they also plan to show at Display Week.
Finally, BOE described a range of optical solutions and waveguide fabrication techniques, but their state of development was unclear.
