At CES 2026, Chris Chinnock of Insight Media visited the CarUX suite (a subsidiary of Innolux) to review their latest smart cockpit innovations. Following their $1.1 billion acquisition of Pioneer, CarUX is now positioning itself as a Tier 1 supplier that integrates advanced display technology with high-end audio and HMI software.
Production Milestones
CarUX is currently supplying high-profile displays for leading automotive brands:
- BMW: Provides the 8K x 2K theater display that folds from the ceiling and the Panoramic HUD, which uses software warping to project distortion-free images onto curved windshields.
- Cadillac: Supplies the 33-inch pillar-to-pillar display found in models like the Lyriq, Celestiq, and Optiq.
Concept & Next-Gen Technology
The suite featured several “concept-stage” technologies aimed at enhancing the future driving experience:
- 3D MicroLED HUD: An eye-tracked, stereoscopic HUD that is remarkably compact (2 liters). While it solves some space issues, it currently faces challenges with pixelation and light scattering into the cabin.
- Dual-View LCD: Uses a parallax barrier to show different content to the driver and passenger. A new “blackout” feature prevents rear passengers from seeing a distracting, mixed image.
- “Who’s Touch”: A proprietary touch system that distinguishes between the driver’s and passenger’s inputs, even when their hands overlap on the screen.
- InvisiView: Displays hidden behind premium textures, such as carbon fiber or leather, that only become visible when activated.
Advanced Panel Developments
- OLED Collaboration: Lacking internal OLED production, CarUX showcased a 15.1-inch flexible OLED developed with Chinese partner EDO.
- High-Performance LCD: Demonstrated a 12.1-inch LCD using chip-on-board (COB) zoned backlighting and Quantum Dots to achieve black levels and contrast comparable to OLED.
