AUO Features Large-Format microLED Tiles and Stretchable

There were multiple microLED demos on display in the AUO booth, but I believe they were all shown at previous trade shows. Display Week 2026 demos included a 42-inch transparent display demonstrating kiosk ordering with face-to-face interaction. Transparency is 60% and the luminance was 800 nits. This is now AUO’s largest native tile which can be integrated into larger display canvases if desired.

The 64-inch demo was shown as a luxury sports box application that tiles two of the 42-inch transparent microLED displays with a seam that is slightly noticeable at a close distance. It is FHD resolution.

The 30-inch “AR box” uses gestures to manipulate graphics with a real object in the background and a 60% transparent microLED in the front.

In addition, the XR interactive window (also shown at CES) is a side window car application that incorporates touch in the transparent microLED display. It also includes a PDLC layer to make the screen opaque for privacy.

At CES 2026, AUO also showed a driver-aware panoramic HUD, and a wood-grain smart surface demo, but they were not at Display Week.

In paper 111-1, AUO noted that reliability under repeated deformation remains a challenge. Key design developments are mostly around improving the resolution and stretchability of the device. For stretchable OLED panels the Kirigami approach of slit islands is common, but with microLED, the serpentine connection approach is preferred to maximize stretchability and PPI.

In their fabrication process, they do not fabricate on polyimide, but rather as a thin film on glass. This allows them to fabricate a high performance TFT device which is not possible with polyimide due to the temperature limitations of that material. With the help of special debonding layers, AUO is then able to lift off the backplane and transfer it to a flexible substrate.

AUO fabricated a 12mm hexagonal-shaped button that offers a deformation height of 1 mm. This was deformation tested for over 1 million cycles without failure and only a small increase in the resistance. We believe these 2026 demos used monochrome microLEDs, but the images do not show any color, so this remains unclear.
