Aumovio, formerly the automotive division of Continental, has developed a suite of window and surface projection technologies designed to transform both the interior and exterior of vehicles into interactive digital canvases.
Key Projection Technologies
- Exterior Window Projection: This system uses a compact LED DLP projector (less than one liter in volume) mounted inside the cabin to project high-resolution content onto the vehicle’s side windows. It is designed for use when the vehicle is parked, enabling features like displaying EV charge levels, personalized welcome messages, or even advertisements for rideshare drivers.
- Surface Projection Cockpit: Introduced at CES 2026, this technology uses up to three miniature projectors integrated into the headliner to project visual content across the entire width of the cockpit. It can display functional data like navigation alerts, decorative patterns, or immersive brand experiences directly onto existing dashboard materials, such as microfiber velour.
- Smart Projection Screens: To ensure image clarity, the technology utilizes a side window that can be electrically darkened using PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) switchable foils to act as an optimal projection surface.
Software and Connectivity
- Cloud Ecosystem: Each projector has a unique ID and embedded software that connects to an in-house cloud. This allows owners or fleet operators to securely download and stream content via a mobile app.
- GPS and Context-Based Delivery: The system is integrated with the eTravel.companion platform, which uses GPS and AI to display relevant content based on location. For example, a vehicle could recognize it is near a sports stadium and automatically suggest displaying the user’s favorite team logo on the window.
Future Outlook
While most of the hardware for these projection systems is ready for integration, these advanced solutions are primarily targeted for production vehicle models starting around 2028.
