At Vehicle Display Interface (VDI) 2026 in Detroit, ams OSRAM demonstrated a new Mini-LED local dimming backlit display.
Display
• A new 12.3-inch mini-LED automotive display with an optical distance (OD) of 1.8mm.
• The optical distance (OD) — measured between the PCB and the light guide plate (not the LED-to-light-guide top, as clarified in the conversation) — is just 1.8mm, unusually thin for a local-dimming LED backlight.
• Uses a larger 8mm pitch to keep total LED count down: 518 LEDs total in this design.
• Performance figures mentioned: ~90% (likely luminance uniformity), a halo figure of merit of 32%, and overall brightness of 1700 nits — described as achieving good homogeneity and high NTSC color gamut.
• Compared side-by-side against a conventional edge-lit backlight: the mini-LED local-dimming version showed a noticeably deeper black level and higher luminance/brightness.
Status
• Automotive-qualified already.
• Not yet in mass production — design/project work is ongoing, with mass production expected next year or possibly the year after.
