In this transcript, Chris Chinnock explores ams OSRAM’s award-winning ALIYOS™ LED-on-foil technology, which received a “Best in Show” blue ribbon at the SID Vehicle Display conference.
ALIYOS™ LED-on-Foil Technology
This innovation replaces traditional thick printed circuit boards with a thin, flexible, and transparent substrate.
- Foil-Based Backplane: ALIYOS™ uses a foil substrate to mount mini-LEDs rather than micro-LEDs.
- High Transparency: The foil is 80% transparent, allowing it to be applied over windows or embedded into surfaces.
- Invisible Light: Because the metal traces are nearly invisible, the light appears to emerge “out of nowhere” when turned on.
- 3D Effects: Multiple layers of foil can be stacked to create a three-dimensional lighting effect.
Design & Configuration
The technology offers automotive designers a new level of freedom for both interior and exterior lighting.
- Low-Resolution Focus: The system is designed for high-brightness, low-resolution patterns rather than complex video displays.
- Simple Routing: Drive lines are easily routed to the edge of the foil, simplifying the integration process.
- Bending Limits: The current prototype supports 2.5D bending (curving in one direction) but is not yet fully conformal.
- Color Options: While currently demonstrated in monochrome, full color can be achieved by stacking three separate primary-color films.
Market Readiness
ams OSRAM is actively presenting this technology to OEMs for integration into future vehicle models.
- First Prototype: The display at the conference represents the first formal prototype shown to car manufacturers.
- Interactive Lighting: The technology is intended for customizable signatures, warning symbols, and dynamic animations.
