NEWS & ANALYSIS

DMD Demand Overwhelms TI
Texas Instruments (Dallas, TX) has under estimated the demand for their DMD (digital micromirror devices). As a result, the company is now struggling to increase production. But even working 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, they won't fully meet demand requirements until early next year.

From the Editor
For me, probably the biggest news from INFOCOMM'99 was the dominance that Texas Instrument's (Dallas, TX) Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology has attained in the last three years. TI is on a roll with more and more projection products turning to the DLP technology. Is there anything stopping DLP from taking over? The answer is yes, but my sense is that momentum has now shifted to DLP technology making any challenge that much tougher.

Microportables Debut
The months of May and June saw the introduction of several new products that are being called a new class of projector. Variously known as ‘microportable,' ‘pocket,' ‘notebook' or ‘personal' projectors, each of these new systems features a weight of less than six pounds, yet they deliver high image quality and a level of brightness (600 to 800 ANSI lumens) which can enable ‘lights on' presentations. All are based upon single-chip DLP designs.

Microvision to Join Optical Display Consortium
The Integrated Small Precision Optics Manufacturing Technology Consortium (ISPOMT) has announced that Microvision, Inc. (Bothell, WA) will join as a consortium member. The consortium is led by the Rockwell Science Center (RSC, Thousand Oaks, CA) and partially funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research, which assisted in bringing together the members.

SpatiaLight Readies SXGA Microdisplay
Microdisplay developer SpatiaLight (Novato, CA) reports they will be ready to begin sampling their new SXGA microdisplay by September. The new device, known either as DisplASIC (Display Application Specific Integrated Circuit) or the ImagEngine 1280DV, is based upon a liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCOS) technical approach.

VESA Upgrades Microdisplay Group Status
At SID'99, members of VESA's fledgling Microdisplay Special Interest Group (SIG) voted to ask the VESA committee to upgrade their status. In June, VESA approved the groups application to become the VESA Microdisplay Committee.
