You may have noticed that we are also posting more news stories
on our revamped web site (www.insightmedia.info). I encourage
you to check this periodically as we are posting breaking news
stories that include additional details or insight, which I hope
most of you have come to expect from Insight Media. We are trying.
In the May issue of MDR, our lead story is one we posted earlier
on the web site. It provides a preview of upcoming microdisplay
device papers that will be presented at SID - and it may help
you plan your time there. Most notable is a paper from NEC describing
a low-temperature poly-silicon LCD microdisplay - the first such
device we have seen from NEC, which has not been a microdisplay
player to date.
Also noteworthy will be a paper by NHK Science & technical
Research Labs that will describe projection systems using very-high-resolution
LCOS panels from JVC. One will feature 4096 x 7680 pixels and
the other 2048 x 3840. Wow!
It seems that JVC is going well beyond the conventional approach
to digital cinema and high-end projection by developing panels
with lots of resolution. Texas Instruments on the other hand,
is clearly emphasizing increases in contrast as more important
than increases in pixel counts - even for digital cinema. The
first front projection products announced by Hewlett-Packard last
month emphasized this by offer a stunning 1800:1 contrast ratio.
Another Wow!
Dell plans to begin selling projectors in the corporate enterprise
market this summer too, joining HP, Compaq and InFocus in a bid
to expand the penetration of projectors. There is lots of room
for growth. As InFocus has pointed out, there is now only a 3-4%
projector-notebook attach rate.
So how will this battle of the giants turn out? Come to the Projection
Industry Summit Conference to find out as we have scheduled a
panel sessions with speakers from HP, Compaq and InFocus to discuss
this very issue.
In other news, SpatiaLight says it has meet initial milestones
with two of its Chinese TV customers and has now placed a non-refundable
order with ColorLink for ColorQuad assemblies. Competition to
supply engines and panels for a bunch of Chinese TV set makers
is heating up and we expect a lot of activity here in the next
6-12 months.
This month's issue also has news about other projection product
introductions from Epson, Mitsubishi, Barco, Hitachi, 3M, Sanyo
and SIM2.
In 3-D displays, Actuality Systems has a new CEO and plans to
continue development on their impressive volumetric display systems,
which uses a modified DLP projector to create three-dimensional
voxels.
And there's a lot more, of course, as can be seen by the Table
of Contents.
Until next time.....
