Through a special arrangement with Japan-based Techno Systems Research (TSR) (Tokyo, Japan), Insight Media offers the English-language edition of TSR's Mobile Display Quarterly. This quarterly report provides analysis of the mobile phone market in two separate reports: 1) Application and 2) Display.

Part 1 - Application

The Application part of the report provides production figures for each mobile phone manufacturer by both area and LCD type. It also clarifies the customer relationships of various OEM, ODM, and EMS suppliers to major set makers. A sample of this information from the report is shown below.

The report finds that quantity of Nokia mobile phones equipped with cameras exceeded 30% in 2007, which has effectively raised the quantity of camera phones on the Japanese market. The quantity of mobile phones equipped with 3 Mpixel cameras will increase in 2008, while 1 and 2 Mpixel camera phones will remain mainstream in worldwide markets. In the Japanese market however, manufacturers are increasingly adding 5 Mpixel camera phone models to their lineups and adding various functions typical of Digital Still Cameras such as face recognition, anti-shake and autofocus.

Nokia's low-end models still dominate unit volumes, but they are increasingly including multifunction models such as 3G-ready handsets and music-ready handsets to its lineups. Its 3G-ready handsets sales are on the rise, and in 2007 overall handset production volume exceeded 420 million units.

Sony Ericsson's Walkman Phone, which has remained strong, has finally started to show slackened growth. Since other manufacturers launched models supporting music, the competition in the music phone market is becoming intense. However, the Chinese market, which is one of the company's main sales areas, has started to show inventory-surplus problems.

Although Apple controlled procurement of devices for the i-Phone in August, it increased production volume of models targeted for the European market in September. Apple is also expected to launch the products in the Japanese market, but there are still various issues pending such as support for WCDMA networks and durability tests.

As Samsung Electronics and LG have adjusted their production volume in Q4'07, it is projected that they will not make large-scale production adjustments in Q1'08. That's because their newly launched mobile phone with a display that covers the front of the unit, has not contributed to increases in shipments yet.

The Application part of this report also cover handset trends, as shown in the figure below.

Handset Procurement Trend by Operator in Japan

The current quarterly report finds that shipment volume in the Japanese mobile phone market was 118.56 million units in Q3'07. Since each communication carrier announced its financial results for the first half of the year that ended in September, carriers controlled handset procurement in order to reduce inventory. NTT DoCoMo, in particular, reduced the number of new products to be launched, toned down the procurement of existing handsets, and continued to reduce the procurement volume from August to October. Nonetheless, the NTT DoCoMo 905 series released in November 2007 succeeded in implementing a rich array of functions including HSDPA, one-seg and GSM, as well as in minimizing the case, and thereby expanding the replacement demand.

Part 2 - Display

This is a comprehensive report that provides the unit shipment information and analysis of the supply-demand balance for LCDs. The Display part of the report provides the supply trend of main LCDs for mobile phones and PDAs.

The report shows the unit volumes by display technology and by supplier as shown in the sample chart below.
