The Need:

Virtually all microdisplay-based projection systems built to date have used an HID lamp such as the UHP as a light source. The use of a HID lamp imposes performance limitations on projectors at both the low- and the high-end of the market. LEDs and laser illumination may be able to expand the market for projection displays -- to both higher performance, lower cost and smaller-sized displays than are possible or practical for HID lamps. There is a need for an evaluation of market segments that compares projection systems based LED and Laser illumination source to conventional HID source in terms of technology, price and performance. Understanding how these factors will change into the future is also a key need.
