LumiLeds Describes Pocket Projector

08.27.2003

At the Projection Summit 2003, Lumileds Lighting (San Jose, CA) (www.lumileds.com) took the opportunity to showcase a prototype LED-based "pocket projector." While not quite pocket sized, and quite dim, it is nonetheless an early prototype that will lead to more impressive system later.

The pocket projector described by Gerard Harbers, advanced development manager at LumiLeds, measured 6 x 3 x 1 inch. However, the size was mainly determined by off the shelf electronics that were used as an expedient. The illumination source was a single 3W white LED powered by four AAA rechargeable batteries, which will run the projector for half an hour when batteries are fully charged.

The unit projector used a Sony (Osaka, Japan) (www.sony.net) HTPS 800 x 225 resolution, 0.44-inch diagonal microdisplay (LCX033AN), which has a transmission efficiency of only 4%. Lumileds has built several versions of LCD-based projectors the best of which produces only a few lumens. The output would be about 6-lumens for a black and white version. A MEMs version pocket projector would have a 15-lumen output for the same illumination source.

In the table we show the required flux in lumens for a particular projection size and luminance. Lumileds target specifications for a pocket projector are a 5 to 15-inch diagonal projected image and a brightness of 100 nits, which would be equivalent to a notebook computer display. An LCD version would be good enough up to a 5-inch diagonal projected image while a MEMs version would be able to do a letter size format.
