At CES, Insight Media moderated a panel discussion focused on
the forecasts for competitive big-screen display technologies.
Leading executives from Samsung, Sharp, LG.Philips LCD and Pioneer
provided forecast data and engaged in a two-hour discussion among
themselves and with attentive audience members.
"The Big Picture of TV Tech" was held in room N264 in
the North Hall of the LVCC on Thursday, January 8 from 3-5pm.
Featured panelists included:
· Bruce Berkoff, executive vice president, Marketing, LG.Philips
LCD
· Jim Sanduski, vice president, Product Marketing, Visual
Display Group, Samsung Electronics America
· Matt Dever, vice president, Product Planning, Pioneer
Electronics (USA) Inc.
· Robert Scaglione, vice president, Marketing, Sharp Electronics
Each panelist provided a spreadsheet full of forecast data for
all of the big-screen display technologies (PDP-TVs, LCD-TVs,
RPTVs, front projection and CRT-TVs) by screen size for 2003,
2005 and 2007.
Key conclusions of the discussion, which was limited to US sales,
included:
· Forecasts for PDP sales by 2007 varied from 1.2M to 3.3M
units.
· Starting from a base of 2.5 to 3M RPTV units in 2003,
some see this segment growing to 4M units by 2007, while others
see it declining to 1.5M units.
· All see LCD-TV sales growing to 7.2M to 10.5M units by
2007.
· CRT sales will either stay flat or decline.
· Front projection remains a small category in terms of
units in the US, even by 2007.
· Most agree that LCD-TVs will take the biggest share of
CRT sales in the 30-inch class range, but estimates vary about
the total units that can be sold.
· Panelists weighed in a factor of two difference in the
size of the 40-inch class segment.
· Opinions vary on which technology will dominate in this
and larger screen sizes.
The 45-slide presentation of this data is now available from Insight
Media for $299. The presentation provides the submitted forecast
data along with many additional slides that focus on each technology
and various screen-size segments, including many useful graphs.
