Sales of digital TV sets continued their upward trajectory in
August and will likely reach the 2M mark by the end of the month,
according to statistics through the week ending August 22 by the
Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) (www.cea.org).
Sales of DTV sets, which includes LCD, plasma, direct view and
microdisplay-based RPTVs, reached 1,976,744 units while sales
of analog RPTVs were 215,022 units, year-to-date.
CEA does not typically break out sales of separate DTV categories,
but it did release some limited statistics for the first six months
of the year. PDP TVs and LCD TVs comprised 20% of the 1.4M DTV
sales in the first half of 2003.
 |
Specifically, it reports that 199,752 LCD TVs ($197.7M)
were sold YTD as of the end of June 2003. This compares
to 21,089 units from the year-ago period ($30.5M) - an 816%
increase. In PDP TVs, 89,975 units ($394.1M) sold in the
first six months of 2003, compared to 25,298 units ($140.7M)
in the year-ago period, which corresponds to a 256% increase.
As a result, the ASP of an LCD TV in the first six months
of 2003 is $990 (vs. $1,446 a year ago), while a PDP TV
goes for $4,380 (vs. $5,562 a year ago).
Insight Media has also used the CEA data to construct a
six-week moving average of sales of digital TVs. This analysis
shows that sales declined in the first half of the year,
but began to move up in May. August sales continued this
trend.
Meanwhile, sales of analog projection TVs declined rapidly
after May. In February, the six-week moving average of sales
showed analog PTVs were 12% of all big-screen TV sales.
By August, it had fallen to around 5%.
