3M Corporation (St, Paul, MN) (www.mmm.com)
has launched a unique screen that captured our eye - and ears
- at InfoComm. Called SoundVu, the rear-projection screen incorporates
speakers over the entire area of the screen. It is a remarkable
innovation that makes the whole screen come alive with sound.

The Vikuiti XRVS-120 eXtended Resolution
Video Screen with Sound Enhancement incorporates the SoundVu
technology from NXT (London, UK) (www.nxtsound.com)
- a technology development company with a focus on sound and
speech. The two reached an agreement recently whereby 3M was
granted exclusive access to the SoundVu technology for the
professional rear-projection screen market.
The result is impressive. A demonstration in a suite at InfoComm
was used to show a clip of an opera singer. The audio quality
was quite good and sound appeared to come right from the location
of the singer's mouth - an interesting experience.

The SoundVu technology works by using a series of actuators at
the edge of the screen. These, in turn, vibrate the entire screen
to create a Distributed Mode Loudspeaker. The concept adds no
depth or size to the screen. And, since it does not work like
conventional loudspeakers, it disperses frequencies more evenly
over the screen surface to produce a wider audio sweet spot. In
addition, there is much less volume drop off and the soundfield
interacts much more sympathetically with the room boundaries.
3M thinks the Vikuiti XRVS-120 screen with the sound enhancement
is a great addition to its portfolio and will be particularly
useful in retail point of sale, trade show exhibits and educational
facilities. 3M's beaded screen technology offers high resolution
and high ambient light rejection - also key features for these
applications.
