CES was a huge and impressive show - with probably as much interesting stuff going on off the show floor as on it. Today, we are distributing the January edition our newsletter, Microdisplay Report to subscribers. In this issue, we have a long article summarizing the highlights from CES. Additional coverage includes many of the new personal display systems shown at the show, plus other industry news. See the Table of Contents (http://www.insightmedia.info/MDR%20TOC/1-05MDRTOC.htm) Insight Media president Chris Chinnock, also gave a presentation at the Enabling Technology Forum that highlighted the status of UHP-class lamp supply and demand, plus provided an overview of alternative projection illumination technologies like RF-excited lamps, Xenon, LEDs and lasers. SPECIAL OFFERS 2) Purchase the 65-page presentation on UHP-class and alternative projection illumination for $199. Coming back to CES, our summarization article revolves around some key trends and observations from the show. One was the emergence of LED-based display systems. We saw 5 LED-based pocket projectors, MD-RPTVs and several LED-based LCD-TVs. These latter make a big leap forward in image quality allowing the expansion of the color gamut for 72% of NTSC to 105%. These are the best LCD-TVs we have ever seen. The "all-in-one" or "instant" projector product may be emerging as a new and exciting category. These are projectors that embed a DVD player and audio system. And guess who will market one soon - Radio Shack. This signals a new mainstream phase for such home use products and perhaps the start of something big. We also noticed a lot of 1080p products realized with DLP, 3LCD and LCOS projection technology as well as LCD direct view panels in larger screen sizes. Performance is excellent and exceptional in some cases. Momentum is clearly building to push toward this format in the coming years. While consumers don't really care what type of microdisplay technology is in their TV, the manufacturers do. Now, the main proponents of high temperature polysilicon LCD projection technology have banded together into the 3LCD consortium to promote the benefits of the technology. We understand the rationale for this, but worry the projection industry may loose focus in its battle with LCD and PDP technologies. We were also impressed with the number of personal display systems shown at CES this year - and the improvements in their performance, styling and comfort. We have been forecasting a big surge in this market by 2008, but this may come a little sooner, judging by the recent progress. The current issue of MDR has full coverage of all of these head-mounted display systems. And, the February issue of Projection Monthly will have complete coverage of CES. Stay tuned.
