Mobile Display Industry Snapshot July 2010

This week, we published the July 2010 issue of Mobile Display Report (MDR) with some interesting observations. For instance, small display components move forward this month with LEDs efficiency numbers up, and we’re finding pico modules in some unique new places (digital camera’s can now offer instant group picture sharing…) Touch technology components go under the microscope too, with projected capacitance vs. resistive “duking it out.” We call the play-by-play that includes new technology, no longer on the sidelines in this latest battle for dominance in the touch panel market. And we’re expecting an “historic turnaround” in this space as projected capacitive touch is forecasted to pass the market leader, resistive touch in total sales this year.

Electrophoretic display kingpin E Ink (with a new display offering—of its own) still dominates the e-paper display segment, but new LCD transflective panels bring color and video response to the space, plus rival SiPix is finally back in the game. We see downward price pressure in the market for EPH displays going forward, as SiPix panels come on-line this quarter, cutting into the healthy E Ink profit margins as supply improves and both companies vie for market share.

Small display OLEDs are in the news this month with some bumps to deal with. Shortages from a single supplier are costing the industry plenty with major firms now backing away from OLED panel deployment plans, or diluting their product offerings by hedging their display bets with dual LCD / OLED design options. We look at the forecasts, announced production and supply plans, and give you our analysis on the future of this enticing yet elusive new display technology. New small display OLED makers will have to prove themselves viable against an ever improving LCD image, that can also compete on other key display metrics, including price (due to fully depreciated capital equipment.)

And the mobile space is exploding with other cool new technology that may begin to rival Apple’s hit parade (the glitch in the iPhone 4 launch not withstanding). Augmented reality points to a whole new direction (killer app?) for mobile displays with thought leaders like Qualcomm leading the way. The 3D trend is also expanding in this space with 3D capture, viewing and even new attachments empowering traditional technologies (like mobile game devices and laptops) in new ways—showing we’ve only just scratched the surface.

We track the key companies moving in the emerging display space to provide a longer-range view giving insight to plan to advantage, prepare for obstacles, and focus in the right direction. This report connects the dots, well beyond what any clipping service can offer, providing insight and meaning to the news. We strive to provide analysis of what the news means to you and the industry.

Below is a summary of the Table of Contents, so we hope you’ll check out the specifics in our category by category breakdown here—and sign up for this monthly resource that becomes a valuable and searchable archive, providing perspective to the emerging display industry as the months and years progress.
