Large Display Industry Snapshot July 2010

Late last week, we published our July 2010 issue of Large Display Report (LDR), one of our largest issues of the year, wrapping up the busiest reporting season in the display industry. In order to report the display industry’s progress and developments to our readers, Insight Media analysts have been on the road for weeks now, covering events and attending private meetings with display professionals in the relentless pursuit of the latest emerging display technology.

In this issue we have coverage of Projection Summit, InfoComm, SID and other industry news and events – 152 pages in all.

At the 10K foot level, we see some interesting trends. For example, WQXGA projectors are becoming more common and showing up in systems where image quality is at the limits of visual acuity. For LED-based projectors, Luminus has announced their LEDs will now last 100K hours in 24/7 operation – that’s 11.4 years. The light source will now easily outlast the product – a novelty in the projection world. In addition, 1,000 lumen XGA LED-based projectors are now on the market (Samsung’s F10). This means LED projectors are now able to enter mainstream conference room and mobile road warrior market segments – also a new development. LED-based projectors will expand in other segments too, like home theater.

It is also becoming clear that laser technology is maturing to the point of commercial introduction in projection systems. Activity is focused on the large-scale cinema systems and pico projector categories, with a focus on ramping up laser device manufacturing and working on system integration issues. We have been talking about this for a while and is now appears it’s just around the corner.

Interaction with projection systems is also moving to higher levels with new technologies and better interfaces. This, and a new crop of even shorter-throw projectors, will have an impact on the education segment. Education is a clear bright spot in terms of unit and revenue growth for the industry.

Tiling and blending of projection systems, as well as wider spread use of tiled flat panel displays, once a niche solution is finding wider adoption in other markets. Creating multi-megapixel canvases is becoming increasingly easy to do, both from an image alignment and blending point of view, and from a pixel processing point of view. This will create new opportunities.

Telepresence systems also came into focus in this issue as a whole pavilion was devoted to them at InfoComm. It did not disappoint -- there were many interesting solutions on display and some of them are even affordable.

And of course, there is plenty of news about everything 3D.

This report gives you the news, but also analysis of what the news means to the industry. We try to connect the dots, which is why we ask our readers to pay for this content. Any clipping service can collect news articles and press releases, but we try to provide insight and understanding.

Below is a summary of the Table of Contents, so I hope you consider purchasing this important industry resource document. –Chris Chinnock
