2009 Pico Report

Picoprojector Poised for Rapid Growth

Insight Media, the leader in tracing emerging display categories, has released its fourth edition of its groundbreaking Picoprojector Report. The new 2009 Picoprojector Report: A Market and Technology Study covering both Embedded and Accessory Picoprojectors Report is a complete rewrite of the 100-page 2008 edition and expands the analysis to over 300 pages. The market for picoprojectors has now started and we expect several hundred thousand units to be sold this year, rising to over 11 million by 2013.

“We believe this forecast represents a balanced view between the enthusiasm of the technology and products developers and the experiences of end users,” noted Matthew Brennesholtz, lead analyst on the report. “Our end user survey results and our market needs vs. expectations analysis has highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the current picoprojector products. These will find a welcome home with early adopters, but to fully engage in the mainstream consumer market, higher brightness and lower cost products are needed. The good news is that our technology and cost models indicate that such products can be developed and meet consumer needs,” concluded Brennesholtz.

The 2009 edition of the Picoprojector Report provides a thorough analysis of the benefits of picoprojectors and their competitive position in the market. Both accessory picoprojectors and picoprojector modules embedded within other CE products like smartphones will be in the market, but the distinction between these classes is becoming more blurred.

In addition, a wide variety of picoprojection technologies are in the running to claim market share. The report provides a forecast breakdown by these classes of picoprojector, by power ranges and by illumination source technology. While higher power, accessory products are more common today, that will shift to lower power, more compact embedded products going forward.

The report also provides detailed bill of material cost on the basic picoprojector modules and provides a revenue forecast for module, accessory projectors and the “virtual” revenue consisting of the retail value of a picoprojection module embedded in another platform.

A comprehensive list of component and finished product suppliers is also provided.

“We have been very careful in this report to be clear about our costing, performance and forecast methodologies and assumptions,” noted Chris Chinnock, President of Insight Media. “This allows readers to validate our results or to make adjustments because of the transparency of our forecasting method.”
